Downloading a world from the Valheim server to your computer
This guide may have been written for an earlier version of Valheim. Some of the information (file paths, panel option names, commands) may no longer match the current state of the game.
Below is a step-by-step guide explaining how to download a world from the Valheim server to your computer so you can continue playing locally.
Downloading a world - step by step
Step 1: Locating the world files on the server
The Valheim world files on the server are located at:
/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local
To access them, you can use the server management panel (the Files tab) or a file transfer tool such as WinSCP.
- Management panel: Go to the Files section and find the
worlds_localfolder. - WinSCP: Set up the SFTP connection according to your server details and go to the
worlds_localfolder.
Step 2: Downloading the world files
- Locate the files corresponding to your world (e.g.
bieszczady.db,bieszczady.fwl,bieszczady.db.old,bieszczady.fwl.old). - Download all of these files to your computer. Make sure you download the complete set to prevent compatibility issues.
Step 3: Placing the files on your computer
Move the downloaded files to the folder on your computer where Valheim stores local data. The default folder location is:
C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds
- Open the AppData folder. If it is not visible, enable showing hidden files in Windows Explorer settings.
- Copy the files into the worlds folder.
Make sure the server is turned off: moving files while the Valheim server is running can cause errors.
Version compatibility: Check that the game version on your computer is the same as on the server to avoid problems loading the world.
